Regardless of the job we do, there is a need for us to look after ourselves while we work.
One of the best ways to stay fit at work is to make sure you maintain good posture, and that your working environment is as Ergonomic as possible. Some simple exercises during the day can also help to reduce the chance of a pain-causing problem building up, which may otherwise progress to the point where you need to miss days of work.
Stay comfortable - Awkward positions will strain your body and eventually become painful.
Listen to your body - If you start to experience pain, STOP what you are doing and find out why. Get treated, before you have a real problem.
Avoid repeating strenuous movements - Remember, the higher the number of repetitions, the greater the risk of repetitive trauma.
Simple exercises for prevention
- Take a micro break - Your body loves movement and sitting still will damage your joints and spine. Get up and move every 20-30 minutes.
- Mini breaks are better - every 2-3 hours move away from the computer for 10-15 minutes.
- Walk as much as you can - 15-20 minutes everyday encourages blood flow to all your joints and muscles keeping them healthy and supple. Take the stairs when you can, and if you can walk to/from your workplace, even better.
TIP: Programme your computer, watch or mobile phone with an alarm to remind you to take a break.
