The person at the core of the Pilates movement is Joseph H Pilates. Born in Germany in 1880, Pilates suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. Rather than lying down to his issues, he worked to find a solution. In fact it was his suffering that inspired him to devise an exercise regime that restored his body to its previous fitness levels. Using a combination of principals of yoga, Zen meditation and the rigorous exercise regimes of the ancient Greeks and Romans, he restored and trained his body with great success, becoming an exceptional athlete and teacher of movement.
