This is Lisa Mclellan. Lisa is our Saturday morning Pilates instructor at the Physio Centres in Glasgow. For her day-job, Lisa works as an addiction worker within North East Social Work Department and has done this job since 2006. Lisa has also taught aqua natal at Blantyre Leisure Centre since September 2013.
Career to date
Lisa graduated from university in 1998 and after a couple of what she describes as ‘”fairly rotten jobs” joined the English Prison Service in 2000 were she became an Officer. Thereafter, Lisa quickly qualified as a Control and Restraint Instructor and gained a commendation for bravery during a prison riot. In 2005 Lisa left the prison service to return to Scotland and worked in the trauma unit at St Mary's with young people who had suffered harm and abuse.
In 2006 Lisa became an addiction worker within Glasgow City Council and undertook a Gym Instructor course because the rehab she worked in had a small gym. She ran many road races with her clients and enjoyed few things more than watching a client who's life had been in tatters crossing the finishing line of a race for the first time.
Having always been interested in sport, health and fitness (she was school sports champion in 1987 and champion netball shooter), Lisa decided to add to her gym instructor qualification…and the rest as they say ‘is history’.
To this question, Lisa replies “I have always loved to take part in physical activity and have been inspired by numerous sports professionals throughout the my life. I’ve had many falls from horses in my younger days and being a runner since I was knee-high to a grasshopper I understand the impact that physical activity can have on our bodies. I've experienced physio first-hand on and off since childhood and suffered many acute muscle spasms in my back and neck. Pilates is an amazing form of exercise on its own but I truly believe that if you practice Pilates you’ll perform better at all other physical activities and it will help improve your quality of life.”
Life Outside Pilates
Lisa is a huge fan of darts and athletics, but admits to being an enthusiastic spectator of pretty much any sport. She also loves music, in particular rock and confesses to indulging in a glass or two of wine from time to time. Needless to say, with 3 jobs on the go, Lisa’s life is pretty hectic, but she still makes her 2-year-old daughter her priority and quite rightly describes as “her world”.
Apart from having a cousin who is the guitarist in the band Simple Minds, Lisa describes her greatest achievement as her daughter, closely followed by gaining her Pilates qualification after experiencing the worst year of her life. But in true Lisa style, she smiles and says “Onwards and upwards!”
