Meet Mhairi Friel. Mhairi has had a variety of roles from Prosthetist through Orthotist and has developed her own successful and innovative foot and leg biomechanics clinics in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Working closely with some of the best respected Orthopaedic Consultants, Sports Doctors and Physiotherapists around, Mhairi boasts a host of premier football clubs and professional athletes in her client base.
Career to Date
Starting out as a prosthetist, Mhairi started her career designing and supplying prosthetic limbs. She then enjoyed various clinical and locum Orthotist roles in Scotland and England. Mhairi’s interest, intrigue and innovation gave rise to her establishing her own gait analysis clinic and biomechanics service in Edinburgh and Glasgow in April 2009 and the great news is that she finds time each week to provide her services at both our Edinburgh and Glasgow Physio Centres.
The science behind foot orthotics and lower limb biomechanics is clearly fascinating for Mhairi. She began her career as a Prosthetist with the idea that she would transfer into Orthotics once she had more experience. On venturing into a career in Orthotics she instantly focussed most of her interest on foot and ankle orthotics and biomechanics. The subject still holds her interest keenly and has become a passion. For Mhairi, it’s clear that work just doesn’t feel like work and the fact that there is always more to learn really excites her!
Life outside the clinic?
Mhairi admits that although work occupies a great amount of her time, she loves to socialise and catch up with friends on a weekend. She also makes a point of going to the gym whenever she can and when she’s not walking her pup! Mhairi loves to travel and escape for short breaks.
Mhairi’s achievement that she’d like to share is work related. It’s that she’s really proud to have developed a busy foot and leg biomechanics clinic, that she modestly states has grown thanks to her reputation as having a very good knowledge base and assessment skill…we know it’s a whole lot more than that Mhairi, but we love your modesty!
My Favourite Thing?
In this respect Mhairi has no doubt…her favorite thing is her dog.
